This piece was created as a visual metaphor for Art and Human Development. We were asked to create a visual metaphor addressing "How do socio-cultural and stage/phase theories contribute to your insight into young people's development and the art they make?"

I chose to create a vase like vessel broken up into 3 different sections reflecting the way a child would make a vase out of clay. the lower portion is hand build by pinching clay to form the walls. The middle section is coil built. At this point, the child has better control over the medium and is able to build more 'logically'. The top portion is wheel thrown - this is a lot more polished and sophisticated. The child is aware of what their piece should look like and strives for excellence.
The hands for handles represent the socio-cultural aspects that supposed to be holding up the piece. Socio-cultural theories have a cause and effect relationship with development and I chose to represent this by choosing to work with clay. When working with clay there is a great understanding of cause and effect. The drawings and graphic images on the side are added to represent the idea of childhood and the symbols they learn to make.
